Every single PS2 God of War was released in a PS3 collection in 2009, while the PSP duo were in 2011. Astro’s Playroom could easily have been a simple tech demo, and in a way it is that. Its main function is to demonstrate the possibilities of the DualSense. It’s the kind of charming 3D adventure rarely seen outside of Nintendo, one dripping with inventive ideas and heartwarming details.

Once inside, the game turns into a side-scrolling platformer, as Astro is able to launch itself to the left or right using a giant spring in its legs. The illusion is incredible, making me feel way more connected to the events on screen than I would without this tension. The fun is to explore locations, jump between platforms and perform simple puzzles. From time to time, we also find enemies that we can avoid or overpower with fast punches. Adding the PS5 Pro Artifact could be a good excuse for players to return to Astro’s Playroom. The game also has one of the easiest platinum trophies on PS5, so completing all levels can be quite rewarding as well.

You can jump down to the wooden platforms, then into a cave where you can pull a wire for this artifact. I figured it might be a cute series of minigames, akin to the robot-themed minigames in the PlayStation 4’s pack-in title, The Playroom. That PS4 game was the sort of thing you boot up once, mess around with for 30 minutes, and then forget it exists. It’s a phenomenal thing, taken even further with adaptive triggers that provide meaningful, forceful feedback.

Basically, it means that the triggers can offer resistance if you’re trying to perform some task that requires a lot of effort. With the feature turned off, the triggers will do a full pull as normal. But once activated, the triggers might stop halfway into a pull, requiring extra effort to “push past” the resistance to get a full trigger pull. Ico, The Last Guardian, Demon’s Souls, Patapon are all things of the past. In Sony’s new reality, there’s seemingly no more room for funding titles that resist Western trends and set their own.
