The irony here is that while Sony did publish the PlayStation 3 version of Demon’s Souls in Japan they were so unimpressed by it they left it up to other publishers in the West, who almost didn’t bother either. The game was a minor hit nevertheless, thanks to strong word of mouth, and while Sony never pursued a sequel developer FromSoftware were snapped up by Bandai Namco to make Dark Souls as a spiritual successor. The most graphically advanced game on the PS5 is a remake of the forerunner to Dark Souls and it’s a definite game of the year contender. Originally released for PC in December 2023, the tactical shooter recently launched for Xbox Series X/S Nara4d and PS… However, the studio is “a one game at a time shop, and right now we are very focused on finishing Ghost of Yō…
More money isn’t required to create fun gameplay or craft engaging stories. As tools become more powerful, these small teams will be ever more capable of creating larger worlds of higher quality. Our first big project was the God of War Collection, which exceeded expectations and set Bluepoint on the path of other remasters like the Metal Gear Solid Collection, the Ico and Shadow of the Colossus Collection, and Flower. We started expanding the quality of our remasters with our work on Gravity Rush and the Uncharted Collection, which opened the door for PlayStation’s JAPAN Studio to let us remake Shadow of the Colossus. Now focused on remakes and able to focus on developing the Bluepoint Engine, we pushed ourselves further, growing our team and our technology, in creating the Demon’s Souls remake. We took great care to ensure the remade characters’ proportions stayed close to the originals so that combat encounters felt very familiar and so the flow of the combat system that fans loved remained intact.
Once you grasp that, they become almost trivial for future runs, but uncovering this trick might take a while—especially with the need to restart the entire level to try again. Moreover, the road to each boss is quite lengthy, somewhat diminishing the enthusiasm to experiment with various weapons and tactics against them. The most enjoyable fights often occur against adversaries that don’t rely on gimmicks, such as Flame Lurker, Maneater, Penetrator, and Old King Allant. Nearly every encounter seems designed to punish you in some way, like the potentially great but brutal idea of placing an impostor at the Nexus hub (think Elden Ring’s Roundtable Hold). This impostor gradually slaughters key friendly NPCs in your safe haven as you progress. Sounds cool, yet this can permanently lock you out of some content unless you make a habit of routinely checking in and talking to everyone.
Demon’s Souls – 50 / 5
The game is referred to as a spiritual successor to FromSoftware’s King’s Field series. Although it launched as a PlayStation exclusive, the passage of time has made the prospect of a potential Demon’s Souls PC release date more likely, thanks to Sony finally being open to gradually bringing its games to the platform. Among the most well-known features of the game are its unique and challenging bosses which test players to their limits. On the other hand, the game’s myriad character-building systems let you craft a character that’s truly your own. The odds that another player will use the exact same equipment and stats as you (unless you’re copying an optimized build that you found online) are small. Few other games let you match your playstyle to your character build as seamlessly as Demon’s Souls.
The Remake Itself Is Amazing,
There’s a vibrancy to the PlayStation 5 remake that feels quite unlike anything developers were ever able to achieve on the previous console. All those beautiful, pre-release screenshots and trailers weren’t bullshit cooked up by a marketing department but genuine examples of this new Demon’s Souls’ impressive, all-encompassing facelift. But once you get into Demon’s Souls proper, you aren’t going to spend much time looking at your character. Instead you’ll be noticing Bluepoint’s gargantuan—and largely successful—attempt to transform the world of Boletaria from a loose collection of ugly, gray levels into a group of believably homogeneous yet distinct regions.

To test this, Spleenczar made a save copy of an almost-completed DLC run, defeated the final boss in the copied save, and then compared how each character fared in an encounter with Messmer the Impaler. Infrequent checkpoints turn certain sections of the game into a slog and FromSoftware’s historically terrible third-person camera left me struggling with otherwise easy fights like the Armor Spider. To developer Bluepoint’s credit, though, it’s done a fantastic job cleaning up the aging PS3 game. It feels more modern than Elden Ring despite that game launching two years later.
